I’ve read of the various effects of global oxygen loss, and I knew about some of the positive effects of increased oxygen. The giant bug thing, however, is totally something I’d never known before. It’s kinda’ awesome ^_^.

The Story of Kyle

One day, when I was a freshman in high school, I saw a kid from my class walking home from school. His name was Kyle. It looked like he was carrying all of his books. I thought to myself, “Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday? He must really be a nerd.”

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on. As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt. His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. He looked up, and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes.

My heart went out to him. So I jogged over to him, and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, I saw a tear in his eye. As I handed him his glasses, I said, “Those guys are jerks. They really should get lives.” He looked at me and said, “Hey thanks!” There was a big smile on his face. It was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

I helped him pick up his books and asked him where he lived. As it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. He said he had gone to private school before now. I would have never hung out with a private school kid before, but we talked all the way home, and I carried his books.

He turned out to be a pretty cool kid. I asked him if he wanted to play football on Saturday with me and my friends. He said yes.

We hung out all weekend, and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him. And my friends thought the same of him. Monday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again. I stopped him and said, “Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!” He just laughed and handed me half the books.

Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends. When we were seniors, we began to think about college. Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I was going to Duke. I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. He was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship.

Kyle was valedictorian of our class. I teased him all the time about being a nerd. He had to prepare a speech for graduation. I was so glad it wasn’t me having to get up there and speak.

On graduation day, I saw Kyle. He looked great. He was one of those guys that really found himself during high school. He filled out and actually looked good in glasses. He had more dates than me and all the girls loved him! Boy, sometimes I was jealous. Today was one of those days. I could see that he was nervous about his speech, so I smacked him on the back and said, “Hey, big guy, you’ll be great!” He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled. “Thanks,” he said.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began. “Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. Your parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach — but mostly your friends. I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them. I am going to tell you a story.” I just looked at my friend with disbelief as he told the story of the first day we met. He had planned to kill himself over the weekend. He talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his mom wouldn’t have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home. He looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. “Thankfully, I was saved. My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable.”

I heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment. I saw his mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile. Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

Never underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture, you can change a person’s life.

This always makes me cry like a fucking baby.

I can’t imagine that any of them knew what the movie they were making would become. These guys (I think they were all really young, so pretty much kids) were just having a fun time filming this Sci-Fi movie thinking that it might make a little money in the box office and make their parents proud for a few years.

It’s amazing to think how these people who are now huge celebrities just had fun on set and acted like any of us (‘us’ being most of the Tumblr crowd :P ) would if we were in even some movie being filmed for a college class or backstage at a local play.

Man of Steel quick review

I recently got home from watching a pre-release screening of Man of Steel. I was impressed for the most part, especially with the early parts of the movie, and I hope that the inclusion of “LexCorp” trucks indicates a sequel with the infamous evil business man. Unfortunately, while the early half of the movie, which mainly explored Clark Kent’s origins and his relationships with family and friends, was phenomenal (although a bit heavy handed with religious allegory that was never delivered upon) the later movie’s actions scenes were over-the-top and felt boring.

The movie opens with the fall of Krypton, introducing the main villain and setting up the events that propel the plot forward. After Cal-El (AKA Clark Kent) is launched to safety, we see scenes of him as an adult, working odd jobs and trying (with little success) not to use his powers to help people. These scenes are interspersed with flashbacks to his human parents and upbringing. Following in the recent tradition of showing a more weak and human side to the superheroes, we see Clark suffering the anguish of being ‘different’. These are very well executed and give a vast depth to a hero that historically has stood as more of a symbol than a “man”. In these early scenes we are also introduced to Lois Lane, who is, in my opinion, the best character in the movie. She’s portrayed as ballsy and tough, and she tends to put even the stronger male characters in their place. She is no damsel in distress.

From there, the action picks up as the villains, survivors from the fall of Krypton, arrive on Earth. There is some tension early on in these scenes that is really strong, and we are again reminded that though the man of steel is theoretically invincible, he is bound by a moral compass that leaves him at the mercy of those without morals.

Most of the rest of the movie is action scene after action scene. Unfortunately, these are mostly variations on soldiers trying to shoot at the practically invincible Kryptonians (and, of course, failing to do any damage) while superman trades blows with one or more of them, sending them flying across sets that are slowly destroyed by the battle. After about 5 minutes, it’s gotten old and stale, and you’re waiting for something new to be added to the formula.

These scenes might have worked out better if the villains had any development, but only one actually is given much of a role in the script, and even he doesn’t feel like a terrible threat until the very end. Before that final one-on-one battle, however, he has a brilliant monologue that finally makes seeing Superman pummel him into oblivion feel completely satisfying.

On the whole, the movie is gorgeous to look at. The special effects are superb, and the script is mostly remarkable. Unfortunately most of the action scenes use the effects as a crutch, and their lack of variety mars the later half of the film.

Guy stages a fake occult secret society meeting, then orders pizza

San Diego photographer Tim King recently hosted a secret society-themed party for eight of his friends, complete with robes, masks, and a soundtrack provided by the “chanting monks” Pandora station. Then he ordered a pizza delivery, turned on a video camera, and waited.

See this is a prank. It’s fun, it’s funny, it doesn’t hurt anyone, and it gives the guy getting pranked a good story to tell with no skin off his back.

The other day someone I’d known for a few years and always liked messaged me expressing sexual interest in me. My first thought was “what’s the catch? Am I being tricked? Is this a joke?” I honestly couldn’t accept that someone I liked (who I thought was waaaaay out of my league) had any interest in me at all.
